The 2030 World Cup is the first ever played on two continents at once - and the Strait of Gibraltar is its defining border. Just 14 kilometres separate Spain from Morocco at the narrowest point. Here is how to cross it well, whether you are chasing a match in Tangier, Rabat or Casablanca.
Option 1: Tarifa → Tangier Ville - the fan favourite
This is the route to remember. Fast ferries run from Tarifa, mainland Europe's southernmost town, straight into Tangier Ville - the city port, walking distance from the medina and, crucially, on the doorstep of a 2030 host city with its 75,500-seat Grand Stade. The crossing takes about one hour, with around 100 sailings a week operated by Baleària and Africa Morocco Link.
Option 2: Algeciras → Tanger Med - more sailings, wrong side
Algeciras is the workhorse: four operators, roughly 300 weekly sailings, crossings from about 30 to 90 minutes. The catch: Tanger Med is a cargo-oriented port ~45 km east of Tangier. Fine if you're heading straight down the motorway; a detour if your target is the city itself. Budget a taxi or shuttle transfer either way.
Option 3: Fly over it
For Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakesh, Agadir or Fez, flying usually beats the ferry-plus-drive combination. Lisbon–Casablanca takes about 1h25, Madrid–Casablanca about 1h50, and Royal Air Maroc plus the low-cost carriers run many daily directs from Iberian hubs. Casablanca's Mohammed V airport connects onward to every Moroccan host city by air or rail.
The two-continent matchday
The scenario every fan is dreaming about: a group-stage match in Seville one day, another in Tangier two days later. The play: high-speed rail or bus Seville → Tarifa area, ferry to Tangier Ville, then Morocco's high-speed line (Africa's first) onward - Tangier to Casablanca in ~2h10. Two continents, three matches, one week. Only at this World Cup.
Practical notes
- Documents: Passport required (national ID cards are not enough for Morocco). Many nationalities enter visa-free for up to 90 days - verify your own case early.
- Currency: Moroccan dirham (MAD) is a closed currency - exchange on arrival or withdraw at ATMs; cards work in cities.
- Rental cars: almost never allowed across the strait - cross on foot, rent locally.
- Booking: ferries sell out around big events. For match weeks in Tangier, book the moment the schedule is out.
